The Ultimate Guide to Finding Your Perfect Lipstick Shade
Finding the perfect lipstick shade for your skin tone may not be straightforward. As for me, I am a chocolate skin tone, and you can only imagine how hard it can be to find the perfect lipstick shade for my skin tone. I would always run to Mac or Sephora to find the right shade.
Things are now becoming more accessible and limiting shades complimenting my skin tone.
Now many drugstore brands have created more shades, and I can now save more money buying drugstore brands instead of turning to high-end brands,
In this blog post, I will discuss some of the best brands and shades I have discovered and how to find the best lipstick shades to suit any skin tone.
Determine Your Skin Undertone
If you are at a loss, figuring out how to find which lipstick shade suits you, there is an easy way to find this out. First, stretch your arm out and check out your veins.
They usually vary in color and appear in three different shades. If you see that your veins are green (like me), you have a warm undertone. If they appear blueish, you likely have a cool undertone. However, if you cannot tell, you have a neutral undertone.
Lipstick shades complimenting a warm undertone are orangey red, brick red and terra cotta shades to enhance the skin.
Shades that compliment cool undertones are usually pinkish and purplish.
Lipstick shades for a neutral undertone are natural shades similar to your skin tone. So shoot for nudes & browns if you have this undertone.
What is the Latest Lipstick Trend?
What I have found to be the most popular trend for lipstick in the beauty industry is the formula of the lip product.
Instead of the typical bullet lipstick, I find that the most popular type of lip product is liquid lipsticks that come with a wand. I am noticing that many makeup brands combine lip color and lip gloss into one because of the boom of lip gloss products. I am also a fan of lip wands because they are so hydrating to your lips, and you do not have to make a bold statement every time you put on your favorite lip shades.
Because the lip color is combined with lip gloss packaging, the amount of pigment is not as bold or firm as your typical bullet lipstick.
One of my favorite drugstore brands of lip color is Maybelline. Maybelline offers the best lip products, from the Lifter gloss to the Super Stay matte ink liquid lipstick.
Decide on your Desired Finish
Another critical factor in determining the perfect lip shade for you is the finish. There are three main types of finishes.
First, we have a matte. I find this finish very popular, and you can also find it sold as a lip wand product. You can usually find bold red and nude shades in matte. I also have a deep wine berry Shade that comes in a lip ward by Rimmel that dries matte.
The second finish is a satin finish. Although I usually find that many traditional bullet lipsticks come in a satin finish, I like to wear a satin finish lip shade when sporting a casual look or do not want a bold look in my makeup.
Last, we have the glossy finish. You can never go wrong with a glossy finish and get away with a soft lip color as a lip gloss. I love to sport a glossy finish and find it the most effortless look to accomplish, as all you do is swipe and go. When choosing a shade for this finish, try a light and soft pink Sometimes, you might not even notice the color, and it looks more like a soft gloss—this look you can sport for the most casual occasions like a supermarket run or running errands.
Conclusion
I hope that you enjoyed reading my lipstick shade tips and recommendations. I also wanted to recommend that you try different shades before buying.
